The School of Computing and Data Science (CDS) at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) extends its warmest congratulations to Dr. Lai Ka-ying, HKU CDS alumna, on joining the Shenzhou-23 manned spaceflight mission. As the first Hong Kong payload specialist to journey into orbit, Dr. Lai’s mission marks a historic milestone for Hong Kong and a proud moment for the HKU and CDS community.
Dr. Lai earned her BSc in Computer Science and Information Systems, MPhil, and PhD in Computer Science at HKU. Her journey from computer science to a national space mission is a compelling embodiment of CDS’s commitment to nurturing interdisciplinary talent. As a payload specialist, Dr. Lai brings profound technical expertise to the mission, demonstrating how strong foundations in computer science, information systems, and cybersecurity are essential to modern aerospace missions.
Prof. Yi MA, Director of CDS, remarked, “On behalf of the School of Computing and Data Science, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Lai Ka-ying on this extraordinary achievement. Her journey from computer science training at HKU to participating in a national space mission is a powerful inspiration to our students. It shows how rigorous education in computing, data science and technological problem-solving can prepare our graduates to contribute to society and the nation in meaningful and far-reaching ways.”
Dr. Lai completed her doctoral research under the supervision of Prof. Kam Pui CHOW, Honorary Associate Professor of CDS. As Dr. Lai’s PhD supervisor, Prof. Chow recalled her dedication and professionalism during her time at HKU. “Ka-ying was an excellent, diligent, responsible, and meticulous student. A space mission requires precision, discipline, and strong teamwork between the crew in orbit and the teams on the ground. These are qualities that Ka-ying possesses in abundance, and I have every confidence that she can carry out her duties as a payload specialist professionally and with composure.”
With data science, secure systems, artificial intelligence, and advanced computation increasingly shaping modern aerospace development, Dr. Lai’s achievement carries special significance for CDS. Her historic mission highlights the importance of nurturing interdisciplinary talent equipped with strong technological foundations and the ability to take on challenges beyond conventional boundaries.
The entire CDS family wishes the Shenzhou-23 mission every success and wishes Ka-ying a safe and triumphant return upon the completion of the historic mission.
