On June 24, Associate Director Professor Siu-Ming Yiu from the HKU School of Computing & Data Science (CDS) was featured on NOW TV’s live news programme “時事全方位” to share the school’s vision and latest developments. The discussion highlighted how CDS is pioneering the integration of computer science and statistics to address the evolving demands of the digital era and nurture versatile, future-ready talents for Hong Kong and beyond.
Professor Yiu explained that CDS’s interdisciplinary approach bridges the traditional gaps between computing and statistical sciences. By combining the strengths of both fields, CDS equips students with robust programming skills and a strong mathematical foundation—essential for tackling complex challenges in artificial intelligence, data science, and emerging technologies. The school’s curriculum is professionally accredited, industry-aligned, and designed to balance theoretical knowledge with practical application.
A key initiative discussed was the introduction of the “AI Literacy” course, which will be mandatory for all HKU undergraduates starting in 2025. This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to equipping every student, regardless of discipline, with essential digital and AI skills.
