We are proud to spotlight the work of Prof. Siu Ming YIU, Master Programme Director of HKU School of Computing and Data Science (CDS), and Dr. Leo YEUNG, Guest Lecturer at HKU-CDS, whose research-informed leadership are helping to reimagine classroom practice for the AI era.
The AI self-learning exercise system UnaGPT was recently featured in SchoolChoice.hk, highlighting how artificial intelligence is being thoughtfully integrated into everyday classroom practice.
Prof. Yiu emphasised that AI should function as pedagogical infrastructure — supporting, not replacing, educators. Leveraging adaptive AI, systems such as UnaGPT provide functions like AI handwriting recognition, rubric-based marking, and structured formative feedback across subjects. By automating repetitive marking and generating actionable learning analytics, teachers are empowered to focus on higher-value engagement and differentiated instruction.
“This is not about replacing educators, but empowering them,” Prof. Yiu noted, underscoring how AI can enable more personalised learning pathways while maintaining professional oversight.
The feature reflects HKU’s commitment to AI education for all, promoting thoughtful and responsible integration of AI to support equitable learning opportunities. As schools explore new technologies, CDS continues to contribute academic insight and research-led guidance to strengthen teaching and learning in meaningful ways.
